Bangkok: Pheu Thai Party is making strides in nominating Chaikasem Nitisiri as its candidate for prime minister, granting its MPs special voting rights while affirming their readiness to accept an opposition status if the vote does not swing in their favor. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, conveyed her gratitude to party members through a LINE message, expressing appreciation for their unity. Meanwhile, Sorawong Thienthong urged the executive committee to address the status of eight "cobra" MPs, stressing that Thaksin Shinawatra's recent travel to Dubai was a personal affair and not related to the party.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports and Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, disclosed that a crucial meeting of Pheu Thai Party MPs was scheduled ahead of the House of Representatives meeting, with the primary agenda being the prime ministerial vote, where Pheu Thai is a key player. Party leaders and coalition representatives were set to attend, with some parties conducting their own meetings.
When questioned about the nomination of Chaikasem Nitisiri, Mr. Sorawong emphasized the autonomy of each party, respecting the decisions of individual House members. He reaffirmed Pheu Thai's commitment to nominating Chaikasem. Discussions for seeking support were acknowledged, though some members were reported to cling to their privileges, which was deemed acceptable.
Mr. Sorawong also confirmed the party's readiness to assume an opposition role if necessary, underscoring the dual capacity of politicians and MPs to serve as both government and opposition. He highlighted Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra's support, communicated through the Pheu Thai Party Line group, thanking members for their solidarity.
Addressing the "cobra" MPs, Mr. Sorawong suggested that their loyalty and intentions would soon become clear, urging those doubting Pheu Thai's viability to step forward. The matter of expelling or suspending the eight "cobras" would be handled by the party's ethics and executive committees.
Regarding former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's departure to Dubai, Mr. Sorawong clarified that the trip was not connected to Pheu Thai and was strictly a personal matter. He reiterated that Thaksin's actions were legal and unrelated to the party, asserting his belief that Thaksin could return to Thailand, though he had no definitive knowledge on the matter.
