Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Vejjayachai has expressed his readiness to take on a temporary role overseeing the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) if assigned by the Prime Minister. He emphasized his commitment to performing duties according to legal protocols without preemptively considering the outcomes of ongoing legal matters. Phumtham addressed the perception of the Senate's collusion case as a legal conflict, reiterating that his focus remains on fulfilling his responsibilities without political bias.
According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham discussed the Constitutional Court's recent order mandating Justice Minister Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong to cease his duties related to the DSI and the Special Case Committee. Thawee had been overseeing the DSI, but following the court's directive, the Prime Minister is expected to appoint a new person to manage the department. Phumtham, as the chairman of the special case committee, assured adherence to legal frameworks, acknowledging the court's authority while noting his relief at not being directly implicated.
Phumtham stated that if tasked by the Prime Minister to directly oversee the DSI, he would accept the responsibility. He expressed no concerns about facing suspension like Pol. Col. Thawee, as he would adhere strictly to legal and authoritative processes. Phumtham reiterated that all actions would align with procedural requirements and existing authority.
Regarding potential court decisions, Phumtham mentioned there are no specific preparations for either positive or negative outcomes, as the focus is on performing duties properly. He highlighted the court's role in gathering and assessing evidence and underscored the importance of following established legal procedures.
He further explained the process of managing special cases, noting that any complaints filed would be processed through legal channels, with evidence collection being a priority. The decision-making would rely on whether the evidence meets necessary criteria, ultimately resting on the court's discretion.
Phumtham addressed political speculation about the situation being a legal battle between coalition parties, framing it instead as a matter of differing perspectives. He dismissed notions of political rivalry, emphasizing adherence to legal standards and downplaying any perceived conflict. In a gesture of goodwill, he mentioned sending flowers to visit every ailing minister, underscoring his neutral stance.
