Bangkok: The Police Chief has initiated an urgent manhunt for those responsible for a series of bombings and arson attacks that targeted 11 gas stations in the southern border region. Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panpetch, Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, has directed his Deputy Commissioner General and Police Region 9 to hasten their investigation into the incidents. The focus is on bolstering intelligence efforts, enhancing security measures, and providing necessary support to local police, with an emphasis on restoring public confidence.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Yingyot Thepjamnong, Assistant Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police and spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police, reported that the Commissioner has tasked Pol. Gen. Samran Nualma and Pol. Lt. Gen. Piyawat Chalermsri with leading the investigation. The attacks, which involved bombings and arson at gas stations and convenience stores in Yala, Narathiwat, and Pattani provinces, began at 00:55 on January 11, 2026. The incidents resulted in damage to properties and injuries to four civilians and police officers.
The spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police highlighted the urgency of apprehending the individuals responsible for the attacks. Initial investigations suggest that insurgent groups intending to incite violence ahead of local administrative organization elections carried out the attacks. The Commissioner General underscored the necessity for comprehensive intelligence and security upgrades to maintain peace and reassure the public. He also expressed concern for the safety of police personnel and instructed commanders to ensure their well-being and morale.
Additionally, the spokesperson from the National Police Office reported that among the injured was Police Lieutenant Prasit Bamrung, who sustained injuries from shrapnel while investigating an explosion at a gas station in Narathiwat province. Pol. Gen. Kittirat has mandated complete medical and welfare support for the injured officer.
