Bangkok: Police officers have come forward in large numbers to file complaints after it was disclosed that Border Patrol Police officers in Region 1 have not received their allowances for the past five months.
According to Thai News Agency, the issue was brought to light by Mr. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, spokesperson for the Democrat Party, who revealed complaints from personnel stationed in the Thai-Cambodian border area. These officers have been deprived of their daily allowance of 240 baht since March, significantly affecting their livelihoods and families.
Mr. Pongsakorn urged anyone else who has experienced "embezzlement or default" on their allowances to report it. The problem, initially thought to be isolated, seems more widespread, as officials from other regions have also reported similar issues. The Democrat Party is calling for immediate clarification from relevant authorities, including the government, the Royal Thai Police, and the Budget Bureau, regarding the reasons behind the budget delay and any potential mismanagement.
The party stressed that the monthly allowance of 7,200 baht is essential for officers' basic needs, including food, children's school fees, and household expenses. The current situation forces officers to spend their own money on daily meals while performing hazardous duties, which the party deems unacceptable. The statement concluded with a call for equality, emphasizing that Border Patrol Police officers should be able to live like their superiors in the Royal Thai Police and Government House.
