Prime Minister Withholds Comments on Cambodian Refugee Relocation Plans

Bangkok: The Prime Minister convened a meeting with the National Security Council (NSC) and reiterated Thailand's four international positions, which Cambodia must adhere to, while notably declining to address questions regarding plans to displace Cambodian refugees from Ban Nong Chan and Nong Ya Kaeo.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chatchai Bangchuad, Secretary-General of the National Security Council, shared the outcomes of the meeting presided over by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The discussions focused on the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, emphasizing four key directives: the withdrawal of heavy weapons by Cambodia, demining efforts, cooperation in combating transnational crime, and the management of problematic borders. These measures aim to monitor and manage the overall situation effectively.

Inquiries regarding the Army's proposed management plan for the Ban Nong Chan-Nong Ya Kaeo area in Sa Kaeo Province were met with a reiteration from Mr. Chatchai that the meeting was centered on monitoring the situation and adhering to the aforementioned four points. He underscored Thailand's stance on international civil society without delving into specifics about the potential relocation of Cambodian refugees.

Currently, the areas in question are under military oversight, with the military determining operational schedules. However, no detailed information was disclosed, and there remains no direct communication line to the area. When questioned about the potential use of local laws to manage the situation, Mr. Chatchai noted that the meeting did not elaborate on this aspect, viewing it as a future consideration.

Regarding any discussions about invoking martial law by the Armed Forces Commanders, Mr. Chatchai confirmed that the meeting did not delve into such details, maintaining focus on the four key points due to time constraints.
