Rafting Adventures Boost Economy as Dried Fish Souvenirs Thrive at Doi Tao Lake

Doi Tao: Doi Tao Lake in Chiang Mai Province is bustling with tourists eager to explore its natural beauty through rafting, which is significantly boosting the local economy.

According to Thai News Agency, visitors are flocking to the area, and villagers are capitalizing on this influx by selling dried fish, a popular local souvenir, generating daily incomes ranging from 500 to 2,000 baht.

Currently, Doi Tao Lake has an abundance of water, attracting tourists who rent rafts to enjoy the scenic views and refreshing breeze. The residents of Doi Tao District, who are primarily fishermen, are delighted as they have ample fish to catch, process, and sell. Souvenir shops lining the road in front of the lake are stocked with a variety of dried fish products, enticing tourists to take a piece of Doi Tao home with them.

Mae Nit Pla Yang, a local shop, highlights that all their fish are sourced directly from Doi Tao Lake. They offer an assortment of grilled and dried fish products, such as fish rings, crispy fish, and catfish, at affordable prices starting from 50 baht per bag. The prices vary depending on the type and size of the fish, with options like dried snakehead fish priced at 150 baht. The shop reports particularly high sales during weekends, thanks to the surge in tourist numbers.
