Senators React Strongly to People’s Party Criticism and Unveil New Constitution Roadmap

Bangkok: More than 50 senators are scheduled to hold a press conference to address criticisms levied by Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, concerning the "blue regime." At this event, Nikorn Chamnong is also set to unveil a roadmap for a new constitution, anticipated to be implemented by 2029.

According to Thai News Agency, the Senate Public Relations Office made an urgent announcement regarding the press conference, which is set for 9:45 AM at the Parliament building. The senators will collectively respond to Mr. Nattapong's accusations that the Constitutional Court, independent organizations, and the Senate are undermining democracy and misusing their power.

The catalyst for this press conference is a Facebook post by Mr. Nattapong commemorating the May 22, 2014 coup. His post criticized the "blue" political regime, alleging that the Senate and other bodies are failing to uphold democratic values and are abusing their power due to a lack of public accountability, which has sparked significant outrage among the senators.

On a related front, Mr. Nikorn Chamnong of the Bhumjaithai Party has revealed a comprehensive plan for drafting a new constitution. If the Parliament conducts the first reading of the bill in June and completes subsequent readings by October, a second referendum is planned for early 2027. Following public approval, a Constitutional Drafting Assembly will be selected, and a 45-member committee will draft the new constitution, gathering public input over the course of a year.

Mr. Nikorn further detailed that the draft is slated for completion by September 2028, with a third referendum expected in February 2029. Upon receiving final public approval, the draft will be submitted for royal assent, with the new constitution anticipated to be officially enacted by mid-2029.
