South Africa Ends Probe on Thai Tire Exports, Secures 1.5 Billion Baht Trade

Bangkok: South Africa has concluded its investigation into the alleged anti-circumvention measures concerning Thai tire exports, a decision that safeguards the continuation of exports valued at over 1.5 billion baht.

According to Thai News Agency, the Director-General of the Department of International Trade, Ms. Arada Fuengthong, announced the successful termination of South Africa's anti-circumvention investigation. This decision allows Thai exporters to carry on with their export operations without facing additional duties that could have impacted trade significantly.

The investigation, which was initiated by the International Trade Commission of South Africa (ITAC) on September 20, 2024, focused on a new type of pneumatic tire used in passenger cars, buses, and trucks from Thailand. In response, the Department of International Trade advocated for a fair review process aligned with World Trade Organization principles and provided continuous support to Thai exporters, with eleven of them actively participating in the investigation process.

Following South Africa's official announcement on March 27, 2026, published in the South African Gazette, Thai exporters are now able to resume their activities in the South African market without the imposition of additional anti-circumvention duties. This development is crucial in maintaining the export value of Thai tires to South Africa, projected to reach approximately 1,599 million baht by 2025.

Ms. Arada highlighted the proactive role of the Department of International Trade in defending the interests of Thai businesses in global trade. The department is committed to monitoring trade measures from international partners and collaborating with the private sector to navigate trade barriers, thus ensuring the competitiveness of Thai products worldwide.
