South Korean Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for Former President Yoon Seok-yeol

Seoul: Prosecutors have filed a petition with the court to sentence Yoon Seok-yeol to death for treason and declaring martial law. South Korean prosecutors have filed a petition with the court seeking the maximum penalty of "death" for former President Yoon Seok-yeol on charges of treason and declaring martial law in December 2024.

According to Thai News Agency, prosecutors stated that Yoon is accused of masterminding a rebellion, which under South Korean law carries a severe penalty, including the death penalty, if found guilty, even though South Korea has not enforced the death penalty for decades.

In their closing statement before the Seoul Central District Court, prosecutors confirmed that investigators found evidence of the existence of the conspiracy, allegedly orchestrated by Yoon Seok-yeol and former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, with the goal of maintaining their political power.

However, the former president continues to deny all allegations, maintaining that declaring martial law was a constitutional power of the president and was intended solely to send a warning signal against opposition parties obstructing the government's work.
