Bangkok: The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is operating train services on the Bangkok-Nakhon Pathom route in observance of Coronation Day. The SRT will operate a special steam train tour on this route to commemorate Coronation Day on May 4, 2026. Today, a special steam train tour was organized for the public holiday. Mr. Anan Phothinimdaeng, Deputy Governor and Acting Governor of the SRT, presided over the train departure ceremony, emphasizing the significance of May 4th as Coronation Day, which commemorates the coronation of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, the 10th monarch of the Chakri Dynasty.
According to Thai News Agency, the event was organized to honor His Majesty the King, promote eco-tourism, and offer the public a chance to experience historical train travel. The atmosphere at Bangkok (Hua Lamphong) Station was lively, with many people participating in the event. The special steam locomotive service on the Bangkok-Nakhon Pathom route is one of seven special occasions when the SRT uses Pacific-model steam locomotives, numbers 824 and 850, preserved at the Thonburi depot.
These locomotives are used on several key dates: March 26th for the founding day of the Bangkok-Ayutthaya railway line, May 4th for Coronation Day, June 3rd for the birthday of Queen Sutida, July 28th for the birthday of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, August 12th for National Mother's Day, October 23rd for King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day, and December 5th for the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Mr. Anan highlighted that the steam locomotive tours are vital in preserving historical heritage and promoting tourism. The SRT also offers other tourist trains like the KIHA 183 and the Royal Blossom train, available for day trips or overnight stays on weekends.
