Bangkok: The sudden death of "Nut-Natthawut Ponglangka," a 35-year-old reporter for a well-known channel, has sent shockwaves through the news industry and triggered a public health warning.
According to Thai News Agency, Nut-Natthawut, who was known for his dedication to journalism, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep after completing a live news broadcast. Friends and colleagues, still reeling from the shock, reported that the cause of death remains unknown, as he seemed healthy with no underlying health conditions.
Dr. Wipach Phanthawimol, a cardiologist specializing in cardiac electrophysiology, has issued a public statement highlighting the potential dangers of sleeping without waking, especially for seemingly healthy individuals. He explained that such deaths typically result from a sudden, severe arrhythmia in the heart's lower chambers, leading to insufficient blood flow to vital organs, including the brain.
The cardiologist outlined two primary categories of causes for these severe arrhythmias in young, healthy individuals. The first category includes identifiable causes such as sudden coronary artery stenosis, myocarditis, and congenital hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. These conditions can lead to severe electrical disruptions in the heart, often without warning signs.
The second category involves causes that may not be immediately apparent, including genetic heart electrical diseases, severe hypokalemia, certain lung and breathing disorders, specific sleep disorders, and abnormally high levels of certain chemicals in the blood. These can all contribute to sudden heart issues during sleep.
Dr. Phanthawimol emphasized the importance of early intervention, including CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), to address these medical emergencies. However, he noted the additional challenge posed when such incidents occur during sleep, highlighting the difficulty in obtaining immediate assistance.
The tragic loss of Nut-Natthawut has prompted a call for increased awareness of sleep-related cardiac risks, especially among young, healthy individuals. While some potential causes can be screened through various medical tests, others may present no prior symptoms, underscoring the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of such unexpected events.
