Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te Makes Unexpected Visit to Eswatini Amidst Tensions with China

Mbabane: Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te arrived in Eswatini on Saturday (May 2) for a surprise visit after the trip was postponed in April due to issues obtaining flight permits through the country's airspace. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te met with King Mswati III of Eswatini at the palace in Lobamba following his visit on Saturday (May 2). He stated that stepping out into the world and offering mutual assistance is an inalienable right of the Taiwanese people and a commitment Taiwan makes to the world, a right that no country can prevent. China strongly condemned the trip. China's Taiwan Affairs Office compared President Lai's behavior to "a mouse running across the street" and called the trip a ridiculous attempt at clandestine travel, criticizing the sneaky nature of the trip as failing to change the fact that the majority of the world accepts the One China principle.

According to Thai News Agency, this trip was seen as a "surprise trip" because President Lai was originally scheduled to visit on April 22, but it was suddenly canceled due to the Taiwanese government stating that China was attempting to obstruct the trip through economic measures and debt relief promises, pressuring transit countries like Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar to revoke airspace permits. As a result, the trip had to be planned in secrecy. President Lai used Deputy Prime Minister Eswatini's private jet to bypass these obstacles and only announced the visit after safely arriving.

The main purpose of Taiwan's leader's visit to Eswatini is to celebrate the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III's reign and his 58th birthday, as well as to strengthen cooperation in economics, agriculture, culture, and education. Eswatini is one of only 12 countries worldwide that maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan and is its only ally in Africa.
