Bangkok: A group of Thai Shia Muslims gathered today to mourn the passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in front of the Iranian embassy, expressing their solidarity with the Iranian people. The devastating assassination of their Supreme Spiritual Leader prompted Shia groups to converge in front of the embassy, ensuring that security was maintained both in and out of uniform. For one hour, traffic in front of the embassy was closed to facilitate access.
According to Thai News Agency, Ali Shahousaini, a 40-year-old representative of the Shia community, articulated that the event was not organized by any particular group. Instead, it represented the broader Shia Muslim community and some Sunnis in Thailand who hold Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, in high regard. Ayatollah Khamenei is viewed not only as the leader of Iran but also as the spiritual leader of Shia Muslims worldwide.
The gathering was organized to express condolences for the loss of a significant figure loved and respected by Shia Muslims globally, particularly in Thailand, which is home to approximately 40,000-45,000 Shia Muslims. The gathering aimed to show that those in Thailand also respect and mourn this leader's assassination. Attendees sang songs of mourning and laid flowers inside the Iranian embassy. The event was chosen as a peaceful demonstration, adhering to the Thai government's request to keep activities within established guidelines and maintain peace.
