Thailand to Begin Construction of Electronic Border Fence in April

Bangkok: Plans are underway to further develop the "electronic fence" project, with construction scheduled to begin this April. The spokesperson for the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters revealed that a pilot project for a border fence along the main border markers 52-54 at Pong Nam Ron, spanning 1.3 kilometers, is complete. The Royal Thai Armed Forces have prepared the area and constructed a road alongside the fence. Coordination with Cambodia has been finalized, and plans are underway to develop an "electronic fence" equipped with sensors and cameras for 24-hour monitoring.

According to Thai News Agency, Major General Witai Laythomya, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Armed Forces, stated that in accordance with the government's policy to enhance border security and address transnational crime, the Royal Thai Armed Forces, under the leadership of General Ukrit Boontanon, the Supreme Commander, has accelerated the construction of a permanent border fence to regulate border areas and prevent all forms of illegal activity. The project is currently making significant progress.

The pilot area covers the main border crossing points 52-54, in Pong Nam Ron District, Chanthaburi Province, with a total operating distance of approximately 1,310 meters. The National Mine Action Center has completed the survey and mine clearance operations to ensure safety in the area. The Royal Thai Army Development Command, under General Sarayut Chanphum, has ordered personnel to prepare the area and construct a road along the fence line, which is now complete and ready for the construction of permanent buildings and fences.

Construction of the permanent perimeter wall is expected to begin in early April 2026, with the goal of completion within 45 days. The spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army Command added that the area in question has been coordinated and agreed upon with the Cambodian side, which also aligns with the Thai side's road along the fence line. Future plans include expanding the construction with permanent walls and electronic fences equipped with sensors and CCTV cameras to increase the efficiency of 24-hour surveillance.

"This border fence construction is not just about building a physical wall, but also about providing reassurance to the people living along the border. The Royal Thai Army reaffirms its commitment to protecting national sovereignty to the best of its ability and is ready to dedicate its physical and mental strength to ensure lasting peace and security for the nation and its people," said Maj. Gen. Witai.
