Bangkok: The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) and six other agencies have announced plans to test Thailand's first Cell Broadcast disaster warning system on May 2, 7, and 13, 2025. This pioneering initiative seeks to bolster public confidence in the system ahead of its full deployment.
According to Thai News Agency, the announcement was made by Mr. Phasakorn Boonyalak, Director-General of the DDPM, during a press conference. The test aims to assess the system's effectiveness in delivering disaster warnings via mobile phone signals across the country. The collaboration includes the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, Public Relations Department, and major mobile network providers such as AIS, True, and NT.
Mr. Phasakorn emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding citizens from potential disasters, highlighting the Prime Minister's directive for a rapid, accurate warning system. The Cell Broadcast system will send concise, easy-to-understand messages, ensuring that the public receives timely information on impending threats.
The testing will occur at three levels-small, medium, and large-across key provinces, including Bangkok. These tests mark the first instance of Cell Broadcast warnings being trialed outside the laboratory. The alerts will mimic real disaster scenarios, with messages appearing on mobile screens in both Thai and English.
The scheduled tests will begin with a minor test on May 2, 2025, focusing on indoor areas such as Chiang Rai Provincial Hall and the Government Complex in Bangkok. This will be followed by a district-level test on May 7, 2025, in locations including Mueang Lampang District and Din Daeng District, Bangkok. The final provincial-level test on May 13, 2025, will cover areas like Chiang Mai Province and Bangkok.
Mr. Phasakorn noted the system's limitations, as it is compatible only with 4G and 5G devices running updated versions of Android and iOS. For older devices, the DDPM will utilize SMS technology to ensure comprehensive coverage. The DDPM is committed to refining the operational procedures to maximize the system's reach and accuracy.
The Cell Broadcast system represents a significant step forward in Thailand's disaster preparedness strategy, aiming to reduce the impact of emergencies by providing rapid alerts directly to citizens' mobile phones. This initiative reflects the government's dedication to enhancing public safety and minimizing disaster-related losses.
