Thaksin Shinawatra Acquitted and Released from Prison

Bangkok: Police Lieutenant General Ruttapol Navarat, the Minister of Justice, has confirmed that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been acquitted and released from prison, following the issuance of the Royal Decree on Amnesty B.E. 2569 (2026). The decree was issued to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's 4th Cycle Birthday Anniversary on June 3, 2026.

According to Thai News Agency, Lieutenant General Ruttapol affirmed Thaksin's inclusion in the amnesty list. Addressing media inquiries about reports suggesting that Thaksin had 1 month and 10 days remaining on his sentence, Ruttapol clarified that Thaksin is considered acquitted under the law, particularly as his remaining sentence was less than one year, according to Section 8.

When questioned about the removal of Thaksin's electronic monitoring (EM) bracelet, Lieutenant General Ruttapol confirmed that it could be removed immediately. However, he noted that the procedure requires an additional review by a committee. Separate committees for each province will handle these reviews, though specific details regarding the timing of these meetings remain unspecified. Despite this, Ruttapol reiterated that Thaksin's name is assuredly on the amnesty list.
