Trat Police Arrest Cambodian Officer’s Family Over Espionage Concerns

Trat: Police in Trat have arrested the family of a Cambodian police officer amid concerns they were transmitting classified information to Cambodia. Investigators from the Trat City Police Station conducted a raid at the family's residence in Ban Laem Hin, Nong Khansong Subdistrict, Mueang Trat District, following suspicions of espionage activities. During the operation, authorities confiscated four mobile phones for examination.

According to Thai News Agency, the raid was led by Captain Siam Cherdchit, who is the head of the policy, planning, and intelligence group of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) in Trat. The arrest stemmed from intelligence suggesting that the family was engaged in espionage by sharing critical information with the Cambodian military. Present at the residence were an 18-year-old woman, her father, and her mother. All mobile devices found at the scene were seized for further analysis.

The 18-year-old woman, who lacks registered residency status, possesses a student ID from a college in Trat Province, Thailand. She is identified as the wife of Police Colonel Sot Sam-ol, the Commander of the 823rd Border Patrol Police Battalion in Cambodia. The colonel, who has a wife in Cambodia, reportedly developed a relationship with the young woman after meeting her at a restaurant in Trat Province, which led to their marriage prior to a border clash.

It was discovered that Police Colonel Sot Sam-ol frequently visited his wife by crossing the border through Hill 400 in Nonthri Subdistrict, Borai District, Trat Province. Although the 18-year-old woman has denied any involvement in espionage, asserting her innocence, authorities remain skeptical and have detained her for further questioning.
