Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that he will not prevent Iran from participating in the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States, stating, "Let them play."
According to Thai News Agency, Trump expressed his willingness to accept any decision made by Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, whom he referred to as a friend. Trump mentioned that he had no objections to Iran's participation and told Infantino to proceed as he saw fit. When questioned about the possibility of Iran winning, Trump admitted he might be slightly concerned but maintained that Iran should have the opportunity to compete.
Trump's decision followed Infantino's announcement at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Canada, confirming Iran's participation despite the ongoing political tensions in the Middle East. Previously, Trump had raised concerns about Iran's presence in the U.S. due to safety issues related to international conflicts. In March, there was a proposal from senior Trump representatives suggesting that Italy should replace Iran, a suggestion that faced opposition, including from Italy itself.
Despite the U.S. president's approval, complications persist. Officials from the Iranian Football Federation were recently barred from entering Canada to attend a FIFA conference. Additionally, Iran's Minister of Sport has publicly stated that Iran should refrain from participating in the tournament given the current conflict conditions.
In the World Cup draw, Iran has been placed in Group G, alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Their opening match is set against New Zealand on June 16th in Los Angeles.
