Bangkok: The Minister of Tourism is optimistic that the upcoming SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games in Thailand will generate economic value and increase employment opportunities across the nation.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn, Minister of Tourism and Sports, announced that the 33rd SEA Games will take place in Thailand from December 9-20, 2025, across three main cities: Bangkok, Chonburi, and Songkhla Provinces. Following this, the 13th ASEAN Para Games will be hosted from January 20-26, 2026, in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Mr. Atthakorn emphasized the significance of these events, which are well-regarded within the ASEAN region and throughout Asia, comparing them to other major sporting events. He projected that hosting the games will create between 12,000 and 14,000 jobs, especially in sectors such as construction, service, transportation, and sports.
Mr. Atthakorn also highlighted the influx of approximately 12,000 athletes, coaches, and their entourages from various ASEAN countries, which is anticipated to boost economic activity in all host and neighboring provinces. He noted that this surge in visitors would drive sports tourism, significantly contributing to domestic revenue during the tournaments.
Moreover, during a Cabinet meeting on October 14, 2025, the government approved the budget for the competition and outlined the expected benefits. These include improving Thailand's standing in the ASEAN community, demonstrating leadership in tourism and sports, motivating Thai and youth athletes to achieve success, and generating an estimated economic value of 5.2 billion baht.
