Prime Minister Praises Efforts in Reducing Road Accidents During 2026 New Year Period

Bangkok: The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to officials across various sectors for their dedication and sacrifice during the New Year holiday, which contributed to ensuring public safety. He highlighted the successful reduction in road accidents, injuries, and fatalities during the 2026 New Year period and urged continued efforts to maintain road safety throughout the year.

According to Thai News Agency, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, conveyed Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's appreciation to officials, volunteers, and community service representatives. Their commitment during the intense 7-day period (December 30, 2025 - January 5, 2026) led to a notable decrease in road accidents compared to previous years. The success is attributed to the integrated efforts of all sectors in accident prevention.

Mr. Siripong noted that the Center for Prevention and Reduction of Road Accidents reported a total of 1,511 accidents, 1,464 injuries, and 272 deaths during the period. Phuket recorded the highest number of accidents and injuries, while Bangkok had the highest number of deaths. Remarkably, five provinces-Samut Songkhram, Nong Bua Lamphu, Uthai Thani, Phrae, and Satun-reported zero fatalities.

Statistics from the campaign indicate a positive trend with reduced accidents, injuries, and fatalities, though speeding and drunk driving remain significant concerns. The government has instructed agencies to enforce road safety measures year-round, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across sectors and strict law enforcement, particularly for vulnerable groups like children and youth.

By examining comprehensive data, the government aims to develop targeted strategies to mitigate road accident risks. Successful models from districts with no reported incidents will serve as templates for future operations. Efforts will be coordinated with public and volunteer sectors to sustain road safety initiatives throughout the year, Mr. Siripong added.
