6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chugoku Region of Japan, No Tsunami Risk

Chugoku: A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Chugoku region of Japan, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The earthquake, which occurred in the western part of the country, was followed by several strong aftershocks. The epicenter was located east of Shimane Prefecture, but the JMA assured there was no risk of a tsunami.

According to Thai News Agency, Chugoku Electric Power, which manages the Shimane nuclear power plant about 32 kilometers from the earthquake's epicenter, confirmed that unit 2 of the facility remains operational. Japan's Nuclear Regulatory Agency also stated that no abnormalities were found in the plant following the earthquake.

The second unit of the Shimane plant had resumed operations in December 2024. This marked its first operation since the nationwide closure of nuclear power plants after the Fukushima disaster in 2011.

West Japan Railway Company announced a temporary suspension of the Shinkansen high-speed train service between Shin-Osaka and Hakata stations. The suspension was implemented to conduct safety inspections following the earthquake.
