Baotou: A devastating explosion at a factory in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of northern China has resulted in the deaths and injuries of nearly 100 individuals. The tragic incident occurred at the Baogang United Steel sheet plant in Baotou, leaving two people dead, eight missing, and up to 84 injured.
According to Thai News Agency, the explosion took place at 3:03 p.m. local time on January 18. The cause of the explosion has been attributed to a 650 cubic meter spherical tank containing saturated water and steam. The injured are currently receiving medical care at local hospitals, with five individuals in serious condition and 79 suffering from minor injuries, including facial cuts and bruises.
Rescue operations are ongoing, supported by an emergency rescue command center that is coordinating efforts across emergency agencies, the fire department, public safety, public health, and market oversight. Authorities have halted production at the affected plant and are conducting safety inspections across industrial and commercial establishments in Baotou. Environmental protection monitoring has detected no adverse effects on air or soil quality, and there has been no wastewater contamination reported. Essential services such as utility and residential heating continue to function without interruption.
Xinhua has reported that an investigation team has been formed in Inner Mongolia to determine the cause of the explosion and assign responsibility. Legal actions are being pursued against those found liable for the incident.
