Bangkok: The Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand confirms that there is sufficient budget to send Thai athletes to compete in the Asian Games.
According to Thai News Agency, the SAT Governor confirmed that there is sufficient budget to prepare the Thai national team for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. The selection process for quality athletes will continue, with the goal of achieving a 6th-place finish in Asia, hoping to build on that success for the Olympics.
Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, stated regarding the budget for preparing athletes for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan that sufficient funds are available. Following discussions with the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, a clear conclusion has been reached. Currently, over 200 million baht has been allocated, and additional funds can be drawn from other sources. Furthermore, leftover prize money from the previous SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games will also be utilized.
Previously, there was confusion regarding the 1.6 billion baht budget framework because this amount included over 500 million baht allocated through sports associations for the SEA Games, leading to public misunderstanding. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, along with the Chairman of the Sports Authority of Thailand, has now discussed and planned the budget for support.
Regarding the preparation plan for the Thai athletes competing in the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, coordination has been established with all 46 sports associations. Full-scale training camps will begin on March 1st. The athletes will compete in approximately 41 sports. The selection process will be upgraded, prioritizing quality over quantity, aiming for strong performance and subsequent Olympic qualification. Initially, around 700 athletes have qualified, but this number may be reduced to approximately 600 to ensure comprehensive support. The full utilization of technology and sports science will be prioritized. The goal is to finish 6th on the medal table, a position the Thai team achieved after winning 12 gold medals, 14 silver medals, and 32 bronze medals in the previous Games, placing 8th overall.
Dr. Kongsak emphasized that from now on, all sports associations must submit clear and transparent athlete selection criteria to reduce complaints and accusations in the future. Athletes who do not meet the specified criteria will not be considered for participation in the 20th Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya 2026, which will be held from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
