Supajee Implements Strategic Measures to Address Fragrant Coconut Price Decline

Bangkok: "Supajee" has initiated comprehensive strategies to tackle the issue of declining fragrant coconut prices. Minister Supajee has directed all concerned units to promptly address this matter by absorbing excess supply, expanding export markets, controlling imports, and inspecting coconut packing houses for fairness to farmers.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Supajee Suthamphan, the Minister of Commerce, stated that the Ministry has been vigilantly observing the fall in fragrant coconut prices and has urged related agencies to integrate efforts to assist farmers and enterprises. The Ministry has been implementing measures to stabilize prices and manage surplus production since July 2025.

Mr. Nantapong Chiraleartpong, Director of the Office of Trade Policy and Strategy and spokesperson for the Ministry, detailed measures enacted in response to the Minister's directives. These include:

1. Domestic Market Measures: The Department of Internal Trade is executing measures in three phases to absorb surplus production. Initiatives include market-leading purchasing points, sales points, and CSR collaborations, with a target of managing 1 million units of milk through various channels.

2. Export Market Expansion: The Department of International Trade Promotion is working to promote exports to new markets such as the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, reducing dependence on China. A business matching event is planned for March 5, 2026, involving 101 exporting companies.

3. Regulating Imports: Measures have been established to control imports within international frameworks, limiting import checkpoints to mitigate smuggling risks. Businesses are required to justify imports and prioritize domestic purchases.

4. Inspection of Packing Houses: The Department of Business Development, along with other agencies, has conducted inspections in Ratchaburi Province, targeting potential nominee operations. Investigations are ongoing into foreign-invested agricultural activities for compliance with the Foreign Business Act.

5. Geographical Indication (GI) Registration: The Department of Intellectual Property promotes GI registration for added value. Four fragrant coconut varieties have been registered, with recent EU registration of Ratchaburi fragrant coconut enhancing trade prospects.

The Ministry remains committed to monitoring coconut prices and implementing additional measures throughout the year to ensure market clarity and income stability for farmers.
