Chonburi: In a significant development, police have arrested a Chinese national, Mingchen San, in Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province, following a raid that uncovered an alarming cache of explosives and firearms. The operation was prompted by an investigation into a car accident involving the suspect, led by Pol. Maj. Gen. Pongphan Wongmanithet, the Chonburi Provincial Police Commander. The raid revealed numerous explosive devices, including war weapons, booby-trapped IEDs, and a bulletproof vest equipped with C4 explosives. Due to the potential danger, police evacuated residents from the vicinity.
According to Thai News Agency, the investigation has expanded to involve officers from Provincial Police Region 2, the Crime Suppression Division, and other agencies. The suspect, Mingchen San, is reported to suffer from depression and has a known interest in firearms and explosives. While the explosives found were non-functional, authorities are investigating if there were any intentions to use them for violent acts.
The firearms confiscated from Mingchen San included a service weapon that belonged to a Bangkok Metropolitan Police officer from Division 2. The weapon had been pawned to several fellow officers and was initially purchased by a police sergeant from Sai Mai Police Station through a welfare program. The firearm changed hands multiple times before ending up with the suspect. Investigations are underway to trace the transactions and determine how the firearm reached the Chinese suspect.
Furthermore, the origin of the ammunition has been traced back to Thailand. The police officer who originally owned the firearm has since risen to the rank of Police Lieutenant, ranked 53 in the Thai police force. The ongoing investigation aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the transfer and possession of these weapons by the suspect.
