Meteor Streaks Across Sky as Mayon Volcano Erupts

Legazpi city: A meteor streaked past an erupting volcano in the Philippines, creating a stunning spectacle captured by a security camera belonging to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). This remarkable event unfolded late Monday night, when a large fireball was seen streaking across the airspace above the active Mayon Volcano.

According to Thai News Agency, there were initial reports suggesting that a meteorite might have impacted the northern slopes of the volcano. However, PHIVOLCS conducted a thorough examination of seismic wave data, acoustic waves, and footage from other camera angles, ultimately confirming that the meteor had completely burned up and dissipated in the atmosphere without impacting the volcano.

The Mayon Volcano, known for its symmetrical cone shape, is located in Albay province and has been erupting since January, spewing lava for over 140 days. PHIVOLCS has maintained an alert level of 3, indicating a continued risk of a dangerous eruption. As a precautionary measure, people are permanently prohibited from approaching the danger zone within a 6-kilometer radius due to the threat of rockfalls and violent explosions.
