Bangkok: The Prime Minister presided over a Buddhist prayer ceremony to offer merit to His Majesty the King. In an event marked by traditional reverence, the Prime Minister and his wife led the proceedings at Sanam Luang, commemorating Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, on her birthday and National Mother's Day, August 12, 2026.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, alongside his wife Mrs. Thanon Charnvirakul, spearheaded the Buddhist prayer and alms-giving ceremony. This event attracted a prestigious gathering, including members of the Privy Council and their spouses, top judicial officials such as the President of the Supreme Court, and prominent political figures like the President of the Parliament and the President of the Senate. High-ranking cabinet ministers, heads of constitutional organizations, and officials from the Royal Household were also in attendance, along with military and police leaders, Bangkok's Governor, and notable private sector representatives.
Upon their arrival, the Prime Minister and his wife were greeted by ten senior monks. The Prime Minister initiated the ceremony by lighting incense and candles to honor the Triple Gem and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's portrait. Following this, the senior monks administered the precepts and led the Buddhist prayers.
The ceremony continued with the Prime Minister, his wife, and other dignitaries offering robes and offerings to the monks. In a symbolic act of merit-making, the Prime Minister poured water, paid respects to the Triple Gem, and offered prayers before the Queen Mother's portrait. The event concluded with the Prime Minister and his wife leading the alms-giving to 193 monks, marking a solemn yet significant celebration of National Mother's Day.
