Paris:The book "Thai Costumes of the Modern Era," detailing the history and heritage of Thai traditional clothing, was launched in central Paris. This significant event highlights the cultural importance of Thai textiles and handicrafts on the international stage.
According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Culture, through the Department of Cultural Promotion, created the book "Thai Traditional Dress of the Modern Era" to document the history, value, and beauty of "Royal Thai Traditional Dress." The book aims to promote awareness of this cultural heritage both domestically and internationally, reflecting Thai identity, craftsmanship, and wisdom.
The initiative for "Royal Thai Traditional Dress" originated from the royal vision of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, to promote Thai arts and culture. During 1960-1962, Thailand's increasing global significance led to the development of eight royal-approved Thai dress styles and three royal-granted blouses. These garments merge traditional Thai attire's beauty with craftsmanship, including silk weaving and embroidery.
The book, titled "Chud Thai," includes historical content and illustrations of Thai traditional dress, featuring images of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and princesses in royal-style Thai dresses. It explores the evolution of these dresses into fashion and patterns, aiming to educate younger generations and those interested in Thai history, art, culture, and design.
On March 26, 2024, the Cabinet approved a proposal to submit "Thai Traditional Dress Knowledge, Craftsmanship, and Practices in Wearing National Thai Costume" for UNESCO registration as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This move underscores the significance and uniqueness of Thai traditional dress as a cultural heritage deeply reflecting Thailand's national identity, with plans for its inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage site later this year.
The Department of Cultural Promotion has produced the book to affirm the tangible value of the royally-inspired Thai dress, which has been passed down from Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's initiative and continues to thrive in contemporary society with potential for international development.
"Thai Traditional Dress of the Modern Era" serves as a historical record connecting the past, present, and future of women's attire in Thailand, inspired by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's patronage of Thai arts and culture. The book aims to inspire the sustainable preservation and development of Thai cultural heritage.
