Bangkok Prepares for Royal Funeral with Sandalwood Flower Workshops

Bangkok:The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Office of the Prime Minister are collaborating to organize workshops for crafting 10 different types of funeral flowers. The initiative invites public participation to create these floral tributes for the deceased, with a goal of producing 3 million flowers by November 30th.

According to Thai News Agency, the event, titled 'Making Sandalwood Flowers From the Hearts of Thai People, a Tribute to the Mother of the Nation,' is scheduled from October 22-24, 2026, at the Sports Complex 2, Bangkok Youth Center (Thai-Japanese), Din Daeng. Mr. Thaiwut Khankaew, Permanent Secretary of the BMA, and Mr. Chatchai Bangchawad, Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister, will lead the opening ceremony and join the public in crafting sandalwood flowers. This event aims to demonstrate loyalty and gratitude towards His Majesty, while also promoting skills in using local natural materials.

The handcrafted sandalwood flowers will be used in the royal cremation ceremony for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, both in Bangkok and other provinces. The Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and BMA are collecting these flowers from the public domestically and internationally. The Department of Public Relations serves as the main communication center for further information.

Mr. Thaiwut Khankaew highlighted that Bangkok aims to produce 3 million sandalwood flowers by the end of November 2026. Demonstration videos for making various floral styles are available online. Additionally, various workshops are open in vocational training schools and centers across Bangkok, offering classes throughout the week.

Private sector locations, including The Mall Lifestyle Stores and Siam Paragon, are also participating in these workshops. Government and private organizations can request instructor-led flower-making demonstrations through the Vocational Training Division.

Individuals making flowers at home are encouraged to deliver them to local education offices or send them by parcel to the designated Vocational Promotion Office by the deadline. The BMA has also set up 93 locations across Bangkok for offering sandalwood flowers during the royal cremation ceremony, providing the public an opportunity to pay their respects in a dignified manner.
