Bangkok:The Joint Information Center for the Thai-Cambodian Situation (JIC) has assessed the current tensions between Thailand and Cambodia at a level of 1.5 on their scale, indicating an abnormal situation that necessitates constant vigilance and monitoring. This assessment places the situation between green and yellow on their tiered system, where Level 1 is green for vigilance and Level 5 is dark red for a critical situation that could lead to conflict.
According to Thai News Agency, the Thai Ministry of Defence, through Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri, confirmed that military forces and intelligence units are actively conducting checks in response to the situation. The assessment follows recent developments at the 2nd meeting of the Compulsory Conciliation Commission under the UNCLOS Convention held in The Hague, Netherlands. The meeting focused on the demarcation of maritime boundaries and included six Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) to maintain an atmosphere conducive to reconciliation.
Ms. Maratee Narita Andamo, Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of these measures in avoiding actions or communications that could create tension. The measures include commitments to the conciliation process, positive communication, and coordinated efforts between the two navies. A third meeting is anticipated in November, contingent on the Permanent Court of Arbitration's schedule.
Major General Winthai Suwari of the Royal Thai Army reiterated the need for vigilance along border areas and the importance of readiness to address any incidents. This includes addressing obstacles such as landmines and ensuring safety in operations. The Royal Thai Navy, under the guidance of Rear Admiral Chanin Sriyapha, is committed to supporting reconciliation efforts with technical inputs and adherence to the six confidence-building measures.
The Royal Thai Navy has also engaged with maritime security agencies to foster a unified approach to maritime security challenges, while continuing surveillance and monitoring efforts in border areas to prevent illegal activities. Air Commodore Natthanai Chanpleng of the Royal Thai Air Force highlighted the integration of lessons from past clashes to enhance future capabilities and maintain readiness across all military branches.
The Royal Thai Armed Forces remain committed to minimizing impact and ensuring precision in operations, reflecting the stance that preparedness is essential for maintaining peace.
