Supamas Urges Universities to Open Demonstration Schools Amid PM 2.5 Concerns

Bangkok: Supamas Isaraphakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), is advocating for universities to open demonstration schools to accommodate parents seeking a safe environment for their children. The initiative emphasizes avoiding outdoor activities or areas that could pose health risks due to severe PM 2.5 levels.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Supamas has called for cooperation from higher education institutions in regions where PM 2.5 concentrations surpass safe levels. The aim is to facilitate online teaching and learning, including at demonstration schools, to minimize exposure to harmful dust for students, lecturers, and staff. This request is not a mandate for closure but encourages institutions to evaluate the situation and make appropriate decisions tailored to their specific areas. Support measures have been requested, and universities have shown excellent cooperation in organizing teaching and learning activities suitably.

Some parents have expressed concerns about the practicality of caring for their children while fulfilling work commitments. In response, the Ministry has asked universities to implement support measures. Parents uncomfortable with the current situation can drop off their children at the schools, ensuring that students avoid outdoor activities or any health-risk areas.

Ms. Supamas emphasized, "The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation is committed to protecting the well-being of students, learners, and staff by reducing health-risk activities amid the severe PM 2.5 dust situation. While these measures may cause some inconvenience, we strive to be flexible and provide the best possible care for everyone involved."
