Bangkok: A young man, unable to handle the pressure, opened fire on a police officer and an undercover agent during a sting operation, injuring both parties. The police successfully apprehended one suspect, while two others are still under investigation and pursuit for arrest.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident took place in Soi Sukhonan, Khan Na Yao Subdistrict and District, where the police and an undercover agent were conducting a sting operation to purchase firearms from the suspects. The situation escalated when the suspects realized the setup, leading to gunfire as they attempted to escape. The police officer sustained a shoulder injury, while the undercover agent was shot in the stomach. Both were immediately transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The scene was marked by a damaged car, broken windows, and traces of blood, prompting forensic officers to collect evidence.
Witnesses recounted the dramatic event, initially mistaking the gunshots for firecrackers. Realizing the severity of the situation, they alerted their neighbors to seek safety by rushing inside their homes and locking their doors. In a state of fear, one witness mentioned grabbing their car keys, mistaking the incident for a robbery rather than a criminal apprehension.
Prior to the shooting, law enforcement officials and undercover agents had arranged a meeting to purchase illegal firearms from three suspects in Soi Kanchanaphisek 9, Khan Na Yao District, where the confrontation occurred. Among the suspects, Mr. Theppitak, also known as Mai, was apprehended along with a handgun.
The suspects face multiple charges, including jointly possessing firearms and ammunition without permission, carrying firearms in public without reasonable cause, discharging a firearm using gunpowder in a public area without reason, distributing firearms without permission, and attempting to kill an officer performing his duties, as well as attempting to kill another person. The apprehended suspect has been taken to Khan Na Yao Police Station for further legal proceedings.
