Bangkok: "Somkid" has revealed that the XEC strain of COVID-19 is not severe, but it is crucial to ensure protection, particularly for the 608 group, which includes vulnerable populations. "Somsak" has provided updates on the spread of the XEC strain, emphasizing the need for preventive measures despite its mildness.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Somsak Thepsuthin, Minister of Public Health, discussed the spread of COVID-19 during the disease control calendar period starting from January 1, 2025. So far, in week 21, there have been a total of 108,891 patients and 27 deaths. In comparison, during the same period in 2024, there were a total of 412,528 patients and 121 deaths.
For 2025, the affected group that has seen fatalities is the 608 group, with 80% being elderly individuals, including children. The XEC strain, a descendant of the Omicron variant, has been identified in the outbreak. While it is not severe overall, it spreads rapidly, posing a risk to the elderly and vulnerable groups. The low death rate is a positive aspect, but prevention remains a necessary focus.
