Chairman Sophon Orders Overhaul of Bangkok Parliament Landscape

Bangkok: Chairman Sophon Saram is spearheading a major transformation of the Parliament building, with plans to revamp the "Sala Kaew" and "King Rama VII Square" into a new landmark and green space in the heart of Bangkok. This initiative aims to connect the area to the Skytrain, enhancing tourism.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sophon Saram, President of the Parliament, together with executives from the Secretariat of the House of Representatives and a working group, conducted a survey around the King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) Royal Monument and Sala Kaew (Glass Pavilion). The purpose was to discuss strategies for optimizing the landscape and maximizing the use of the space. The initiative also received input from Mr. Ase Sukyang, President of the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage, Mr. Preeda Hutajuda, President of the Thai Urban Planning Association, and Mr. Pichet Kunathamarak, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, who provided insights on the renovation plans.

The Speaker of Parliament emphasized that the renovation's core concept is to make the Glass Pavilion functional and climate-appropriate while retaining the designer's original aesthetic. The surrounding area will be redesigned to blend with existing structures and support the planned subway station in front of Parliament.

Mr. Sophon stated, "We must utilize the Parliament space to its full potential, commensurate with the investment. We need to thoroughly examine the area to ensure public access and efficient use. My duty is to improve the space to its fullest potential, benefiting both the public and members of Parliament. It must become another green space for Bangkok, a place for exercise and to promote tourism. Importantly, we must consider how to achieve this quickly."
