Government to Adjust Compensation for Local Government Employees Retroactively

Bangkok: The government is moving forward with adjusting compensation for "local government employees," effective retroactively from May 1, 2024, to raise their income in line with the government's salary adjustment policy.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the government is advancing efforts to enhance the income and quality of life of public sector personnel at the local level. The Central Committee of Local Government Officials and Employees has announced adjustments to the remuneration rates for contract employees of local administrative organizations. This move aims to align with the government's policy of adjusting salaries for civil servants and government officials, following the Cabinet resolution of November 28, 2023.

The adjustment focuses on the remuneration scale for employees of provincial administrative organizations, municipalities, and sub-district administrative organizations. It encompasses general employees, employees hired for specific tasks, and specialized expert employees. The adjustment will be retroactive from May 1, 2024, and will undergo continuous adjustments from May 1, 2025, to align with qualifications, skills, and job characteristics.

For employees hired before the effective date of the announcement, their compensation will be adjusted through "severance pay" to ensure they do not receive less than those newly hired under the new rate. Local administrative organizations are expected to issue orders adjusting compensation based on the established criteria.

Ms. Lalida emphasized that this compensation adjustment is a significant step in supporting local personnel, who are crucial in delivering services to the public, including public services, maintenance work, administrative work, public health, urban development, and supporting local government missions.

'Local government employees are the frontline workers who work closest to the public. This compensation adjustment is not just about adjusting income figures, but about reaffirming that the government values workers at all levels and aims to boost morale within the local government system so that they can deliver quality services to the public,' the deputy spokesperson stated.

The government seeks to ensure fair salaries for government officials while enhancing the efficiency of the public and local sectors to provide citizens with faster, more comprehensive, and higher-quality services.
