Boston: Joe Mazzulla, head coach of the Boston Celtics, has been honored with the NBA Coach of the Year award for the 2025/26 season by the NBA. This accolade recognizes his leadership in guiding the Celtics through a challenging season marked by significant team changes and injuries.
According to Thai News Agency, Mazzulla emerged victorious in the voting process with 392 votes, surpassing other notable nominees such as JB Bickerstaff of the Detroit Pistons, who secured 312 votes, and Mitch Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs. Bickerstaff led the Pistons to an impressive top finish in the Eastern Conference, while Johnson's efforts brought the Spurs to a second-place finish in the Western Conference.
Mazzulla's achievement is particularly commendable given the Celtics' 56-26 record, which earned them a second-place finish in the Eastern Conference. This success came despite the departure of key players like Al Horford, Drew Holiday, Luke Cornet, and Kristaps Porzingis. Additionally, the team faced the challenge of losing starting quarterback Jayson Tatum to a long-term injury, with few expectations of his return within the season. Nevertheless, Mazzulla's guidance ensured the team delivered a notable performance.
This marks Mazzulla's first time receiving the Coach of the Year award, a recognition he narrowly missed in the 2023/24 season when he led the team to a 64-18 record, securing a top-ranked finish in the Eastern Conference without receiving votes for the accolade.
