Liver Fluke Infection Detected in 4,000 Mahasarakham University Students

Maha sarakham: The Minister of Public Health has reported that 4,000 students at Mahasarakham University have been infected with liver fluke, necessitating further stool sample examinations.

According to Thai News Agency, Public Health Minister Phatthana Phromphat disclosed that confirmatory testing is required for these individuals following initial screenings. He emphasized the importance of consuming cooked food and sourcing food from reliable providers to prevent such infections. The Minister noted that a significant number of people in Maha Sarakham province were found to have the parasite, with approximately 4,000 individuals undergoing screening. While traditional methods involve testing stool samples for parasite eggs, a new, more sensitive method akin to the ATK test has been introduced for quicker results. Despite this advancement, confirmatory stool testing remains necessary.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health convened a meeting this morning to devise strategies for intensifying campaigns that promote the consumption of cooked food. Provincial public health offices have been urged to discourage raw food consumption while respecting cultural eating habits. The emphasis remains on ensuring food safety by choosing trusted sources.

In response to inquiries about the Prime Minister's directive to Bhumjaithai Party ministers to highlight their achievements, Mr. Phatthana humorously remarked, "Anyone can forget, but please don't forget me," accompanied by a mini-heart gesture to the assembled reporters.
