Bangkok: Natthapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, chaired the inaugural meeting of the "Shadow Cabinet," focusing on the pressing energy crisis. Representatives from the fishing and transportation sectors were invited to discuss the challenges they face and to explore potential solutions. Ruangpanyawut emphasized his role as a mediator, committed to amplifying voices that have been overlooked by the government. According to Thai News Agency, Nattapong announced that the meeting aimed to address the immediate issues impacting the fisheries and transportation sectors due to the ongoing energy crisis. He expressed the People's Party's commitment to acting as a conduit for relaying these concerns to the government. In the fishing industry, rising fuel costs and seafood prices are significant challenges. Access to essential fuels like B20 biodiesel is restricted, particularly for small-scale fishermen who cannot legally purchase it in bulk. Ruangpanyawut compared this fuel crisis to the challenges posed by IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing) laws, highlighting the compounded difficulties fishing communities face, including mounting debt and competition from seafood imports. He expressed optimism about adapting to future energy transitions. The transportation sector also voiced its grievances, which have been compiled by People's Party MPs for submission to the government. The sector feels constrained by double standards, and the implementation of current measures is sluggish, taking up to 42 days. This delay complicates matters further during a time of widespread financial hardship caused by job losses.
