Bangkok: Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, has openly addressed his ownership of multiple firearms in light of the Prime Minister's recent policy prohibiting the carrying of firearms. He clarified that his collection, comprising 12 firearms, is intended for collecting and sports use, accumulated prior to his tenure in office.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suchart discussed his asset declaration to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), which listed the firearms. He expressed his agreement with the Prime Minister's policy and reassured that the firearms are part of a collection that predates his ministerial role. He also highlighted his interest, shared by many men, in collecting amulets and similar items, stressing the importance of responsible ownership.
Mr. Suchart further clarified that he does not personally carry a firearm. He emphasized that, by law, only police officers are authorized to carry weapons, as ordinary citizens are not permitted to do so. He noted that the P.12 permit, necessary for carrying a firearm, has not been issued by the current government, suggesting that existing permits have expired, thus restricting firearm possession to police officers performing their duties.
