Air Pollution Alert Issued for National Children’s Day Activities

Bangkok: Air pollution warnings have been issued for several areas ahead of National Children's Day, with the Pollution Control Department (PCD) forecasting a rise in PM2.5 levels on January 10, 2026, and continuing into the following week. The period from January 13-16, 2026, is particularly crucial as stagnant air and low ventilation rates are expected to affect Bangkok, its surrounding regions, and the upper central area.

According to Thai News Agency, the PCD reported an increase in PM2.5 levels across the country as of January 9, 2026, at 7:00 AM. While most areas remain within standard limits, some regions have reached the orange level, indicating the beginning of health impacts. This includes five districts in Bangkok, as well as the provinces of Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Nakhon Phanom, and Yasothon.

Air pollution levels in various regions are as follows: Northern region (6.7-33.2 µg/m³), Northeast region (13.8-39.9 µg/m³), Central and Western regions (19.2-45.2 µg/m³), Eastern region (11.6-28.1 µg/m³), Southern region (10.7-20.5 µg/m³), and Bangkok and surrounding areas (19.3-44.6 µg/m³). The projected increase in PM2.5 levels during Children's Day and the subsequent week is attributed to stagnant air conditions and low ventilation, particularly affecting Bangkok and the upper central regions.

The National Energy Policy Office (NEPO) has urged parents to check air quality levels before participating in Children's Day activities. To minimize exposure to particulate matter, they advise using public transportation and engaging in activities close to home. If outdoor activities are unavoidable, parents are encouraged to wear face masks and adhere to the Ministry of Public Health's guidelines.
