Son in Chiang Rai Fatally Stabs Mother During Drug Withdrawal Episode

Chiang rai: A tragic incident unfolded in Chiang Rai as a 32-year-old man, identified as Pakin, fatally stabbed his mother, Phan, during a drug withdrawal episode. The altercation occurred after Phan forbade her son from consuming alcohol, leading to a violent confrontation in their home. Pakin, who attempted suicide after the attack, is now in critical condition.

According to Thai News Agency, CCTV footage captured at a noodle shop on Ratsabamrung Road in Tambon Rob Wiang, Mueang Chiang Rai District, shows Pakin, who is the son of the shop owner, wielding a knife and threatening his 64-year-old mother. The footage revealed the escalating tension as Phan collapsed in fear before retreating inside the house, where the violence continued out of sight. Alarmed neighbors quickly alerted the Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station.

Upon arrival, police discovered the house locked from within, necessitating the assistance of rescue workers to gain entry. Inside, officers found Phan deceased in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. Nearby, Pakin was discovered with a severe self-inflicted neck wound, having attempted suicide with the same weapon used in the attack. Authorities provided immediate first aid and transported him to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital, where he remains under critical care.

Eyewitnesses reported that Pakin had been drinking beer and eating grilled fish on the second floor of the residence prior to the incident. A heated argument ensued when Phan tried to prevent him from further alcohol consumption due to his history of drug use and current withdrawal from methamphetamine. Neighbors recounted hearing Phan's cries before an unsettling silence followed.

Investigators suspect that Pakin's violent outburst was triggered by a combination of drug withdrawal symptoms and alcohol intoxication, potentially inducing a psychotic episode. He is currently under police surveillance at the hospital, awaiting legal proceedings on charges of "paternal murder."
