Chatchart Sittipunt Resigns as Bangkok Governor to Contest Second Term as Independent

Bangkok: Chatchart Sittipunt, the Governor of Bangkok, has announced his resignation, effective May 18th, as he prepares to run for a second term as an independent candidate. The announcement was made during a live-stream session on his personal Facebook page while he was at the City Hall Plaza in Phra Nakhon District.

According to Thai News Agency, Chatchart expressed his condolences over a recent train-bus collision incident, which resulted in eight fatalities and approximately 33 injuries. He emphasized the need for solutions to prevent such incidents in the future. Chatchart noted the removal of vehicles and clearance of traffic as part of the immediate response to the accident. He acknowledged that railway crossings remain problematic, especially on roads leading from Chachoengsao Province, and highlighted the importance of enhancing safety measures at these intersections.

Chatchart shared details of a pre-scheduled city inspection run that took place earlier, describing it as his last run as governor in his current term. He addressed rumors about his resignation, confirming that he will officially step down at 5:00 PM on May 18th. The resignation is timed to allow him to attend his son Saendee's graduation ceremony abroad.

Chatchart explained that his term was set to end on May 21st, and resigning ensures a smooth transition and the appointment of an acting governor while he is away. He reiterated his commitment to running for a second term as an independent candidate and assured that his resignation will not affect the scheduling of the gubernatorial and Bangkok City Council elections.

He also highlighted that the elections will occur on the same day as planned, without requiring additional budget, and urged the public not to believe misinformation. The participation of Bangkok deputy governors, Mr. Wisanu Thrapsompol and Mr. Shanon Wangsaengboon, in the city inspection was noted, while Associate Professor Dr. Tawida Kamolwech was absent due to her involvement at an accident scene the previous night.
