Ministry of Culture Hosts Grand Merit-Making Event for World Vesak Day

Bangkok: The Ministry of Culture is organizing a significant merit-making event in celebration of World Vesak Day, titled "Lighting 1 Million Lanterns and Reciting 1 Million Chants as an Offering to the Buddha."

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Culture, is leading this event, which includes a series of activities beginning with Buddhist chanting ceremonies and almsgiving to 29 monks. This morning's event took place at Wat Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram, with Mr. Prasop Riangngern, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Mr. Chaiyapol Suk-iam, Director-General of the Department of Religious Affairs, and representatives from various Buddhist organizations and networks in attendance.

The event features additional activities like offering wooden supports to the Bodhi tree, presenting blankets, and watering the sacred Bodhi tree. Attendees can also pay homage to sacred objects and participate in cultural activities such as lotus flower folding. Local community food products are available for purchase during the event.

In the evening, the "Garden of Light and Faith" event will take place, featuring an illuminated display of lights, evening prayers, and the recitation of the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta. The night will include meditation, a candlelit procession, and the lighting of one million lamps. The event will also feature a Dharma sermon and the lighting of candles in honor of the Triple Gem, continuing throughout the night until dawn.

Visakha Puja Day is recognized by the United Nations as an international day since 1999, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Buddha. This event allows Buddhists and individuals from all sectors to engage in merit-making activities, preserving cultural traditions and applying Buddhist teachings in their daily lives.
