Royal Thai Army Confirms Heavy Artillery Shelling on Chong Sangam Casino

Sisaket: The Royal Thai Army has refuted claims that the attack on the "Chong Sangam Casino" was light, asserting that it involved a significant bombardment with over 50 artillery rounds, tanks, and aircraft. Despite the strong exterior of the building remaining intact, the interior suffered extensive damage. The Army emphasized that the operation followed a tactical plan. According to Thai News Agency, on June 1, 2026, the Royal Thai Army addressed concerns about the intensity of operations against scammer gangs at the Chong Sangam border checkpoint in Sisaket Province. The Army confirmed that the operation adhered to military tactics, prioritizing key targets without neglecting any areas. In periods of elevated border tensions, assessments of threat levels and desired outcomes are crucial for allocating combat power effectively. The emphasis is on targeting and eliminating primary threats to Thailand's security. Once critical situations are stabilized, the strategic plan dictates pursuing subsequent targe ts to eliminate existing threats. Army sources confirmed that the operation in the Chong Sangam area, a key target, proceeded as planned towards the end of the timeline before a ceasefire was implemented. The forces involved in the destruction mission consistently provided support fire using tanks, artillery, and aircraft to dismantle enemy operational bases. The operation utilized all weaponry types intensively according to the schedule, similar to other areas. However, damage assessment from external observation is challenging due to the location being in enemy territory, preventing direct inspection. Army sources elaborated that several target structures, especially casinos with strong reinforced concrete exteriors, remained externally intact but internally damaged from explosions and air attacks. This was notably true for multi-story buildings in Chong Sangam, attacked from above while receiving ground support fire. The area served as an operational base for opposing forces. Following continuous attac ks, the opposition could no longer effectively counterattack from that location, leading to a ceasefire. The Army reiterated that all operations were executed according to strategic plans, prioritizing military effectiveness and national security.
