Bangkok: The Ministry of Culture expressed satisfaction with the successful nationwide lighting of lanterns and prayers on Visakha Bucha Day 2026, emphasizing the strength of faith, unity, and the continuation of Buddhism in the country.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sabida Thaiseth, Minister of Culture, highlighted the success of activities promoting Buddhism during the Vesak Day festival in 2026. These activities were organized under the theme "Lighting 1 Million Lamps, Chanting 1 Million Prayers, Offering Homage to the Buddha on World Vesak Day," by the Department of Religious Affairs. The initiative received a positive response from Buddhists across the nation, who participated in large numbers, reflecting the power of faith and unity in Thai society.
Key events took place both centrally and regionally. In Bangkok, at Wat Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram, many Buddhists engaged in chanting ceremonies, offering alms, donating to the Bodhi tree, circumambulating the temple, and participating in the "Lighting 1 Million Lamps, Chanting 1 Million Prayers" event as an offering to the Buddha. Regionally, the Department of Religious Affairs collaborated with provincial cultural offices to drive activities at important temples and religious sites nationwide, especially in nine pilot provinces: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phrae, Phayao, Phetchabun, Sakon Nakhon, Songkhla, Sukhothai, Uthai Thani, and Uttaradit. This resulted in widespread participation, creating a phenomenon of illuminated lamps and chanted prayers simultaneously across the country.
The Minister of Culture noted that the success of this year's event also positively impacted the economy and society. The activities provided a platform for communities, small businesses, and cultural networks to sell their products and local food, generating income for locals and boosting religious and cultural tourism. The Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce projected that the 2026 Visakha Bucha Festival would generate approximately 4,000-4,500 million baht in economic activity, marking an increase of over 5% compared to the previous year. This growth is attributed to it being an important Buddhist holiday, a long weekend, and the "Thai Helps Thai Plus" campaign, alongside government-mandated price controls on religious goods, ensuring fair prices for consumers.
Additionally, there was an increase in participation from children, youth, young adults, and foreigners in Buddhist activities. Despite challenges like weather conditions and space limitations, all agencies collaborated to manage the events effectively, ensuring public safety and convenience. Many areas creatively incorporated local identity and culture into their events, enhanced by the "Proud to Wear Thai Attire Across the Nation" campaign. The events reflected a unique and contemporary Thai identity.
The 2026 Vesak Day celebration marked a significant achievement in using religious and cultural dimensions to create social and economic value. It fostered faith, goodness, and cooperation among Thais nationwide. The Ministry of Culture plans to continue developing this event into a major national activity that people of all ages can participate in annually. The Ministry, through the Department of Religious Affairs, will expand cooperation with Buddhist networks and partners across sectors, developing activity formats and communication through digital channels to make religious activities more accessible to the public. The goal is to make Visakha Puja Day a "day of doing good deeds, building unity, and sharing happiness with Thai society," sustainably connecting people, communities, and Thai society.
