Thailand’s National Security Council Defends Strategy Amid Criticism

Bangkok: The Secretary-General of the National Security Council acknowledged the criticism and affirmed that there is a strategy in place to tackle security issues, quell the unrest in southern Thailand, and resolve the border conflict with Cambodia. Mr. Chatchai Bangchawad addressed the criticism from Lieutenant General Paradorn Pattanathabutr, a member of the Thai Sang Thai Party and former NSC Secretary-General, regarding the perceived relaxed approach of the current NSC leadership in handling security concerns.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Bangchawad insisted that despite accepting the criticism, his actions are not haphazard. He emphasized that the NSC's resolutions, including policies, strategies, guidelines, and responsible units, are sensitive and classified. Disclosing these details publicly could potentially allow conflicting parties to exploit the information. The strategy in place is designed to protect Thailand's sovereignty and reclaim territories. The NSC closely monitors the implementation of solutions and holds monthly meetings to ensure a unified approach to the Cambodian issue.

The government has adopted the "Understand, Access, Develop" strategy for the southern border provinces. This policy, set for 2025-2027, aims to link the government, the people, and civil society. Coordination among various agencies is facilitated by a special government representative. Peace talks in the southern border provinces have been ongoing, led by Mr. Thanat Suwannanon, Director of the National Intelligence Agency. Small-scale discussions have been continuously held to address ongoing issues.
