Bangkok: The Prime Minister has mandated stringent security protocols to ensure the safety of residents in the southern border provinces, emphasizing the need for unity and understanding across racial and religious lines.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra addressed the escalating unrest in these regions, clarifying that the government does not condone any form of violence. She has instructed both military and police forces, alongside Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, to enforce security measures rigorously. Furthermore, discussions are underway to explore how the government can support and cooperate in maintaining peace.
The Prime Minister also appealed to the media for assistance in promoting unity, stating, "We do not want to divide by religion or race because everyone is a person with a family." She stressed the government's stance against violence, reiterating the value of every human life and urging public understanding of the issue.
In response to inquiries about the causes of violence in the southern region, the Prime Minister highlighted ongoing analyses of various conflicts and security concerns. She noted that the government is focused on enhancing security forces while simultaneously addressing any misunderstandings that may arise through communication efforts.
Addressing the potential involvement of Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, former prime minister and advisor to the ASEAN chairman, in negotiations, Ms. Paethongtarn confirmed that Mr. Thaksin has been in contact with Mr. Anwar Ibrahim, the ASEAN chairman, to support dialogue efforts. Although multiple channels for negotiation exist, no significant progress has been made yet.
Regarding public safety and trust, the Prime Minister reassured citizens that the government is committed to resolving the unrest, with soldiers deployed to the area and checkpoints established. The government is proactive in legal enforcement, ensuring that lawbreakers are prosecuted to maintain public safety.
In response to survey results indicating a lack of public trust in the government's ability to resolve southern unrest, the Prime Minister emphasized ongoing efforts in both understanding and increasing the number of officials. She noted that discussions in the cabinet meeting included input from coalition parties with representatives in the affected areas, indicating a vigilant approach to the issue.
Concerning negotiations with the BRN group, the Prime Minister stated that the Director-General is tasked with initiating contact for talks. Addressing the BRN group's condemnation of violence and their call for accountability, she assured that police have been directed to apprehend the perpetrators to restore a sense of safety among residents.
