Director-General of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Monitors Flood Situation in Chiang Rai Province

Chiang Rai: The Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) presided over a meeting to assess and address the ongoing flood situation in Chiang Rai Province. The meeting aimed to provide relief to affected residents and ensure coordinated disaster preparedness efforts across various sectors.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phasakorn Boonyalak, Director-General of the DDPM, chaired the meeting alongside Chiang Rai Province Governor Mr. Charin Thongsuk, Deputy Director-General Mr. Chairat Kaewpiangpen, local government leaders, and relevant officials through teleconference. Mr. Phasakorn underlined the need to alleviate the suffering of the populace and stressed the importance of integrating efforts to prepare for potential flood disasters.

Meteorological reports have indicated that Thailand officially entered its rainy season on May 15, 2025, with anticipated rainfall levels expected to be approximately five percent higher than average. This increase raises concerns about possible tropical storms and subsequent heavy rains, which could lead to flash floods, forest runoff, and river overflows. Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra has tasked Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul with monitoring the situation closely, ensuring support and assistance for those affected.

Mr. Phasakorn mentioned having visited Mae Sai District, where he observed a reduction in water levels and an improvement in conditions, though recent rains might reverse this trend. He urged local authorities to monitor weather patterns and water levels vigilantly, using all available communication channels to keep residents informed. Should conditions worsen, the DDPM is prepared to issue emergency warnings and deploy disaster relief teams.

The DDPM is actively coordinating with several agencies, such as the Meteorological Department and the Department of Water Resources, to assess emerging threats and inform at-risk communities promptly. Mr. Phasakorn emphasized the role of local entities in providing timely updates, which enable the DDPM to deliver precise warnings and assistance.

In preparation for potential future floods, resources and personnel from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center, Region 15, Chiang Rai, have been mobilized. Should local resources prove insufficient, the DDPM will provide additional support to address the challenges effectively.

The meeting also addressed concerns about arsenic contamination in the Kok River, with discussions focused on prioritizing public health and safety. The DDPM plans to collaborate with national and international agencies, including Myanmar, to address contamination issues and ensure safe water quality.

Mr. Phasakorn concluded by highlighting the increasing frequency and severity of climate-induced disasters, urging provinces to maintain readiness and inter-agency coordination to minimize disaster impacts and expedite aid to affected communities.
