Bangkok Faces Challenges of Urbanization, Pollution, and Waste Management

Bangkok: The city of Bangkok is grappling with significant urban challenges as its boundaries continue to blur with surrounding provinces. Associate Professor Dr. Thanyaporn Suntorntham, an expert in futurism and director of the Institute of Area Studies at Thammasat University, highlights that despite residing in Pathum Thani province, her daily commute to Bangkok makes the capital her primary living space. This reflects the experience of many who are affected by Bangkok's issues, from traffic congestion to infrastructure management, as the distinction between the city and its neighboring provinces fades.

According to Thai News Agency, one of the pressing problems is the PM2.5 dust crisis, primarily caused by combustion engines, construction activities, and outdoor burning. Dr. Thanyaporn suggests that addressing this issue requires technological solutions, such as air purification systems using turbines to draw and compress air into water. However, implementing such technology on a large scale poses a significant challenge.

The city is also struggling with waste management. Dr. Thanyaporn points out that household waste separation is challenging due to unfavorable packaging, and the high moisture content of food waste complicates recycling and energy production. Currently, only 20-30% of Bangkok's waste is incinerated, with the remainder sent to landfills in nearby provinces. She advocates for a Circular Economy approach to manage waste sustainably within Bangkok's boundaries.

Flooding remains another critical issue due to Bangkok's below sea level location, necessitating a managed drainage system. Despite improvements, clogged narrow streets and alleys continue to hinder efficient water drainage, posing ongoing challenges for the city's infrastructure.

Looking ahead to the upcoming election, Dr. Thanyaporn emphasizes the need for leadership and teamwork. Independent candidates must demonstrate knowledge and expertise, with clear policies that resonate with residents across districts. Revitalizing Bangkok involves integrating innovation, efficient management, and a sustainable vision to ensure the city's prosperity for all its inhabitants.
