Building Collapse in Northern Manila Leaves Workers Trapped and One Fatality Reported

Manila: Rescue efforts are underway to save workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in the Philippines. Hundreds of rescuers are still battling to save at least 23 construction workers believed to be trapped under the rubble of a nine-story building under construction in northern Manila, Philippines, which collapsed in the early hours of this morning local time. One death has been reported. According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred in Angeles City, Pampanga Province, approximately 80 kilometers north of Manila. At least 24 workers initially managed to escape or were rescued safely. Several individuals sustained injuries, including a Malaysian tourist who was staying in a nearby hotel and was harmed by falling debris. Tragically, the tourist has since passed away. It is believed that at least 23 workers remain trapped beneath the debris. Rescuers have been able to communicate with two of them, who have been heard calling for help. Signs of life have been detected amidst the twiste d concrete and steel structures. Over 100 rescuers are working with bare hands and drilling equipment, proceeding with caution due to the precarious stability of the building and the risk of further collapse. Damaged electrical infrastructure and wiring are complicating access to the building's core. Heavy machinery has now been deployed to remove debris more efficiently and speed up the search for those trapped inside. Initial investigations revealed that the building collapsed around 3:00 AM during a thunderstorm with strong winds. An examination of the construction permit documents showed that the building was approved as a nine-story hotel-style condominium. However, illegal construction was underway to add a 10th floor for a swimming pool. This unauthorized addition is believed to have contributed to the structural overload and subsequent collapse.
